Write about the following topic:
Nowadays many students have the opportunity to study for part or all of their courses in foreign countries. While studying abroad brings many benefits to individual students, it also has a number of disadvantages. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
You should write at least 250 words.
Higher standards of living and lower communication costs allow an increasing number of students, especially from high-income families, studying abroad. Studying and living far from home benefit a student in many ways, but also imply certain drawbacks.
The most notable reason for following a degree in a foreign country is the high quality of the program offered. Universities in English-speaking countries such as Australia, the US or England attract an enormous number of foreign students every year for their prestigious status. They have not only quality teaching staff, but also modern facilities and equipment that are not available in schools in developing countries.
Furthermore, young people always desire to go far from home, longing for freedom from their parents. To study abroad is a solution that many choose to make this dream come true. They can live the life they want and broaden their knowledge. They would become more independent and happier as a whole. All of the customs, regulations and mindset that they brought along from their home countries will be tested in the new environment and might not be favorable anymore. They can replace these or part of these with what they prefer, what suits them best.
While flying to a foreign country in many aspects fulfill the youngsters’ dream, it might not be necessarily beneficial for the country that they have left. Graduates might not want to go back to their homeland anymore as foreign countries promise more opportunities and higher salaries. In this case, talents will be lost.
As all the reasons above, rarely any students in a poor country do not choose to study abroad if they have a chance. However, home countries should have right policies to encourage these people to use their knowledge to help the countries later on.
