Write about the following topic:
Many people choose to learn practical subjects, therefore theoretical subjects will no longer be taught in universities. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
You should write at least 250 words.
It is unarguable that more and more graduates are unemployed. What they learnt from theoretical subjects cannot help them find a decent job. An increasing number of people tend to learn practical subjects. So some people think those subjects should not be taught in universities. While others believe that those subjects should be included on the university’s curriculum due to students’ mental development.
There are, however, several reasons why it can be argued that theoretical subjects should be exclusive. Perhaps the principle argument is that those subjects could not help students to increase employment opportunities. As the ability to draw well or run fast cannot impress employers, compared to computer skills. The other major argument is that knowledge learned from those subjects is mostly outdated. For example, more and more people prefer running the stores on the internet with the rapid development of technology. However, there are few management books which teach readers how to manage this kind of store. At the same time, most lecturers still utilise outdated textbooks to teach students.
On the other hand, there are also strong arguments for retaining theoretical subjects in universities. One major counter-argument is that the purpose of studying in universities is not only to prepare students for their future careers, but also to develop their all round culture. Some subjects relative to ethics tend to develop students’ personality as the youngsters are easier to be misled after school.
In conclusion, there are a variety of arguments on the both sides. However, I disagree that theoretical subjects will no longer be taught in universities, while considering students’ healthy development. I think the best way is that university will cooperate with some companies offering the internship for their students.
